International Overseas Jobs

In these hard economic times when companies are closing down and filing for bankruptcy; when jobs are hard to come by and hard to keep, you may start to feel like you have exhausted all your option. However, your problem may be that your horizons are just not broad enough; there may be no jobs for you where you are but it is possible that one is waiting for you overseas.

There are many reasons why you might consider taking a job overseas; better pay, better employment opportunities, the chance to live in and learn about other parts of the world or maybe you just want a temporary change of scenery. Whatever your reason, there may be a job out there that can give you what you are looking for.

There are many volunteer and exchange programs available if that is what you would like to do; especially for college students and recent graduates there are quite a few agencies such as the Peace Corps that you can work with in other countries. You could also look into an exchange program offered by some countries – Japan for instance, that is always looking for English-speaking persons to hire for a few years to teach Japanese students the English language; at the same time they make sure that you are immersed in their culture and send you to classes to learn their language as well.

If volunteer and exchange programs do not appeal to you or they don’t pertain to your line of work and your goal is to travel rather than to settle into a steady job, another avenue that you could look into is a short-term contract. A short-term contract will last anywhere from 3 months to 3 years – it is up to you how long you will stay and it allows you to live in and learn about the country and its culture without making a full time commitment; at the end of your contract you can return home, renew your contract or move on to another country and another short-term contract.

If you are thinking of completely relocating on a long-term basis or for a number of years, you can check the newspapers and your State Department for information relating to any international job offers but your best bet will probably be to go online and browse through the listings there as you can search for exactly the kind of job and terms that you are looking for and most websites will connect you directly with international employers.

When making a decision as major as moving overseas to work, particularly on a long-term or indefinite basis, make sure that all the legal-work is taken care of; often it is your new employer that is responsible for getting your work permit so you can legally work in that country but there are other agencies that you can go to if necessary, that will take care of getting the necessary visas, permits and any other papers that you may need.
